Thymosin Alpha-1 (Tα1) is a naturally occurring 28-amino acid peptide originally isolated from thymosin fraction 5 of bovine thymus tissue by Goldstein and colleagues. It represents the biologically active N-terminal fragment of prothymosin alpha. Tα1 has received regulatory approval in over 35 countries (tradename Zadaxin, SciClone Pharmaceuticals) for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and as an immune adjuvant in cancer treatment.
